Beyond the Box: Custom Details Go a Long Way in a DC Home Renovation Project
When it comes to making a house a true home, custom details make all the difference in the world. At Wentworth this is one of our mottos – whether you’re looking for a custom plate rack or custom doors to match your home’s historical period charm, our design-build team understands that custom doesn’t come in a box. In other words, custom details are built, not bought!
When we began an addition and renovation of a kitchen, sitting room and master suite in the Glover Park neighborhood of Washington, DC, our team knew the homeowner wanted custom details to blend with her older home. Custom design details began to emerge in the space throughout the entire design and construction process, but it wasn’t until the project neared completion that our experienced craftsman really got to work on the custom details that took this project from ordinary to extraordinary!
Design Details: Custom Trim for Arched Windows & Doors
Arched top windows and doors were custom ordered and made for the project. Each arched window and door requires its own custom interior trim, with a profile to replicate the home’s original molding. Our team of experienced carpenters uses a multi-step approach to fabricate the arched windows and doors.
First, large sheets of paper were used to make a pattern (template) of the window and door arches. After molding sizes and profiles were established, our team cut a form to fit the pattern for the arched moldings.
Once the team ensured a proper fit, the wood was cut and glued to rough dimensions. Double-sided tape was used to hold the rough wood on the pattern template. The wood was then trimmed to fit the pattern. A planer/molder tool with an elliptical cutting jig was set up and a series of passes through the molder achieved the finished profile and measurements.
Once fabricated, our construction team installed the moldings at each arched top window and door, a step that brought the room’s new character to the forefront of the design. With just those custom details, the room was transformed into a space that is not only more beautiful but much more personal as well.
