Historic Houses in Maine
My wife and I took a two-week vacation in July where we rented a house in Northeast Harbor, Maine on Mount Desert Island—adjacent to Acadia National Park. We were fortunate to attend the Open Garden Day sponsored by the Garden Club of Mount Desert Island (MDI). Below are two of my favorites of the homes and gardens visited.

The Yellow House
Designed by renowned architect Fred Savage, the Yellow House (so named by its owners) was built in the Colonial Revival style around 1892 in Northeast Harbor, Maine. The design of this charming cottage was embellished by Savage with a curved front portico and Ionic columns. More recently the owners installed a 30-foot-tall cedar hedge for privacy at the perimeter of their property and a lawn for croquet that is used frequently in the summer.
Nannau
This circa 1904 summer home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Overlooking Compass Harbor in Bar Harbor, Maine, the cottage was designed by Boston architecture firm Andrews, Jaques and Rantoul. Considered a superior example of Shingle style architecture, the house has a steeply-pitched hip roof and a unique single-story entry portico that has a steeply-pitched roof with a flared overhang somewhat hat-like in appearance.
