Period Style Home from Architect to Architect
Architect Arthur B. Heaton designed many period style homes in the Washington, DC area between 1897 and 1947—he had a preference for styles that were popular during the 1920s, such as:
- Colonial Revival
- Tudor Revival
- Craftsman
In the Chevy Chase Village neighborhood, there are a number of custom homes designed by Heaton, the majority of them Colonial Revival. He often worked for real estate developers and investors during the ‘20s and built a lot of custom homes. In 1923, he was hired by Clyde Asher, who developed a portion of 34th Place in Northwest. Five modest homes—including the one Bruce and his wife purchased 13 years ago—were designed as an assemblage with landscape architect John H. Small. They are a combination of the Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival styles, and most have mirrored floor plans, which helped reduce costs and efforts during construction.

Heaton is known for his well-designed floor plans—Bruce didn’t need to make major changes to the home’s living spaces. However, as is the case with the majority of older houses that no longer fit modern living, a bit of renovation was required. He remodeled the kitchen and opened up the wall between the dining room and kitchen. All the older bathrooms were updated, and he created a master suite by reconfiguring two bedrooms. A new rear porch addition overlooks a landscaped garden, and mechanical systems were upgraded. After the appropriate remodeling, the house now will be comfortable for many decades.
“I believe Heaton would be pleased to see the remodeling I have done to one of his many charming homes—passing it on from one architect to another,” Bruce said.
