Helical Piers: An Important Part of Foundation Work During Construction

New homes and additions are beautiful and are well worth wait during the weeks of construction. Although the construction phase (the “build” stage of design-build) of a remodeling project isn’t exactly glamorous, it’s extremely important.

“Behind the scenes” (in these cases, literally underneath) of a beautiful new home addition are the elements that make it possible. One of the most important parts is the foundation. It must be installed correctly—and be strong and reliable. Helical piers can help with this.

What Are Helical Piers?

Helical piers are high-torque screws that are installed hydraulically to provide foundation support stronger than normal concrete footings. Made from strong galvanized steel, they are turned into the ground, deep beneath the soil, until they’re stable enough to build on. Helical piers are used in foundation repair work as well as construction.

Wentworth Construction

Wentworth’s production manager recently acquired a new skill by being trained to install helical piers for our foundation work. He attended a training seminar by the primary U.S. manufacturer of helical piers to become a certified installer. We have since been able to install numerous foundations with helical piers, saving our clients time and money.

Welding is another skill our production manager chose to develop to benefit our clients in terms of cost and time. Often, our remodeling projects will require welding for structural steel members or a simple stair railing. Hiring an outside subcontractor for a small welding projects like these can be expensive and slow down the work flow.
